The
snare drum is one of the most important parts of a drum kit. The kit,
also known as a drum or trap set, is a collection of drums and other
instruments which are arranged for easier accessibility by the musician
who plays them. Cymbals are the most common non-drum percussion items
to be included. Other potential instruments include tambourines, triangles,
wood blocks, and chimes.
A snare drum gets its name from the snares which are stretched across
its drumhead. For reference, the drumhead is the membrane that is stretched
over either one or both of the open ends of a drum. Typically, the snares
are stretched over the bottom one.
The snares of the snare drum may be created from any of a variety of
materials. These include metal or plastic cable, gut cords, or curled
metal wire. Some of these drums will have a second set of snares on
the internal side of the top drumhead. Pipe and tabor sets as well as
some military drums are the more common types to include this second
group.
