Flutes
are musical instruments which are part of the woodwind group. These
instruments are aerophone. That means that they do not utilize reeds.
Sound is produced by air flowing over an opening.
Flutes are among the oldest instruments known. In fact, the oldest
one may date back to 43,000 years ago. This was created from the femur
bone of a bear and was found in Slovenia. However, whether or not this
is an actual flute is disputed. More recently, in 2008, one was discovered
in Ulm, Germany. It dates back to at least 35,000 years ago.
These Paleolithic flutes are actually the earliest known musical instruments.
Of course, there may have been plenty of other styles of music makers
which did not last as long. However, when it comes to historical fact
as opposed to theory, the flute is the oldest instruments known.
