The
electric violin has existed in many forms since the 1920s. It is basically
a violin which has an electronic sound output. Today it generally has
a solid body and has built-in pickups so that it can be electrified.
However, it can also be a regular violin fitted with a pickup.
For that latter circumstance, the terms "electro-acoustic violin"
or "amplified violin" are more accurate. One of the first
performers of this earlier creation style for an electric violin was
Stuff Smith. He was a jazz and blues artist of the swing era.
Electric violin options we first made commercially available in the
1930s and 40s. The companies behind this included The Electro Stringed
Instrument Corporation, National Valco, and Vega. During the 1950s,
a small number of these instruments were produced by Fender.
