All
stringed instruments will need to have the strings replaced occasionally.
Cello strings have a thicker gauge than viola or violin strings. They
are typically made from nickel cores wrapped in nylon or cat gut.
Each string on the cello is a different diameter. Replace
the cello strings one at a time to prevent the bridge and sound post
from collapsing. The strings should be put on a few days before a performance
because it takes them a few days to stretch.
This means that the cello strings will need to be retuned
frequently after the new strings have been put on. Caring for the strings
will help prolong their life. Wipe the rosin from the strings with a
soft cloth after every use, rosin build-up can affect the tone of the
strings.
