A brass band is a musical group consisting entirely of brass instruments with the exception of a percussion section. Commonly seen brass band instruments include trumpets, trombones, saxophones, sousaphones, tubas, and percussion instruments. A traditional British style brass band has twenty five players not including the percussionists.

Brass bands originated in the 1820’s. They gained popularity due to the frequent competitions between bands. Brass band instruments can be seen in festivals all around the world.

In New Orleans brass bands are part of the tradition and culture of the area. The music played by the brass bands in New Orleans is a fusion between military style marching music and African folk music. The instruments are often the same as British style brass bands with a few less players.
