Bongos
are small drums that are played with the hands and held between the
knees while seated. They are single headed, open ended drums that are
joined together in the middle by a block. Bongos can range from cheaply
made, very low quality to finely crafted, expensive instruments.
When purchasing bongos it’s important to know what
to look for to prevent being duped. The center block should be made
of wood; plastic blocks break too easily and will crack with repeated
pressure. The hardware on the tuning rim of the bongos should be strong
and heavy weight.
Inspect the rims. They should be welded into shape; stamped
rims will lose their shape over time allowing for separation which will
affect the sound quality of the drums. The shells should be made from
a hard wood or fiberglass. These materials project sound the best. The
shell should also be free of gaps or cracks.
