A
bass drum is a drum that has either an extremely low pitch, or an undefined
pitch. They come in several different varieties, including versions
for orchestras, drum kits, and marching bands. In any setting, they
are generally the largest drum on the stage.
No drum kit is complete without a bass drum. Usually referred to (at
least when it comes to drum kits) a “kick drum”, these drums
are used in nearly every genre of pop music. The name “kick drum”
comes from the pedal that is used to strike, or kick, the drum head.
In marching bands, there are usually several different sizes of bass
drum. The largest of these will have the lowest pitch, and the pitches
get steadily higher as the drum size decreases. Most marching bands
will have anywhere from three to five of these drums.
