Banjos

Modern banjos come in a variety of forms and typically have four or five strings. Sound from a banjo is created by a vibrating membrane of either animal hide (traditionally) or synthetic materials, which are stretched over a circular wood frame. These materials are similar to drum heads and are usually held in place by a metal tone ring and various types and numbers of brackets – depending on the banjo’s particular make and model. Some banjos have a separate “resonator plate” on the back of the pot, while others have an “open back.” As with other stringed instruments, playing styles vary; but banjo playing is typically characterized by a fast arpeggiated plucking (or picking).
