The Puerto Rican cuatro features ten strings in five courses. It is tuned in "fourths" as follows:
From low to high B-e-a-d'-g', 54321, with B and E in octaves and A, D, and G in unisons.

Very little is actually known about the exact origin of the Puerto Rican cuatro; but it is believed that this instrument has been present on the island of Puerto Rico (in various forms) for around 400 years. The cuatro actually belongs to the lute family of stringed instruments and is now considered the national instrument of Puerto Rico.
