This gorgeous Barraza BZGR101 Full Size Guitarron Mexicano (which means "large Mexican guitar" in Spanish) is a very large, deep-bodied, 6-string acoustic bass guitar. It is specifically designed to be played in mariachi groups, although it also works beautifully in a variety of other music ensembles.

This Barraza Guitarron is clearly similar to the standard guitar; yet, it is not a derivative of that instrument. Instead, it has roots in the sixteenth-century Spanish "bajo de una" ("below one") stringed instrument. The latin style guitarron is a fretless stringed instrument that features heavy gauge strings most commonly nylon for the high three and metal for the low three. With its booming bass and soulful romantic tone, the guitarron is generally considered the "heartbeat" of today's mariachi music performances.

As a result of its great size, the Barraza Guitarron Mexicano can achieve tremendous audibility. This means that it usually does not require any amplification for performances in smaller venues. It is typically played by "doubling" notes at the octave, which is facilitated by an unusual A D G C E A tuning. Sometimes the high A is lowered an octave, which places it just one octave above the low A.
